Toddler’s painting sells for £27,000
Theatre director Sir Trevor Nunn paid £27,000 for a ‘Damien Hirst’ painting – that was reportedly made by a two-year-old.
He writes: “Trevor Nunn, who had studiously ignored me up to that moment, was over in a flash, congratulating me on a wonderful performance.
“He swivelled round to address Damien. ‘Ah Damien, so good to meet you. I have one of your spin paintings’.
“‘Oh yeah? Which one?’ The answer was something like Squirly Hoops Touch My Nuts Peace and Love.
“‘How much did you pay for it?’ said Damien. ‘Oh, er…’, said Trevor looking away. ‘Go on, how much?’ ‘Twenty-seven grand.’
“‘Oh right. Well that one was done by Keith’s son Alfie and my son Connor’.”

19th Century Bomb Found in Whale
Part of a 19th century bomb has been found inside a whale.
The fragment is part of a time delay bomb that was introduced in 1879 and manufactured until 1885, reports the BBC.
It suggests the bowhead whale may have swum its first strokes not long after the American Civil War.
Scientists say it is rare to find a whale over 100 years old but believe some may reach 200.
The bowhead whale was killed by indigenous hunters off Alaska as part of their subsistence quota.
The 9cm fragment was lodged in the whale’s shoulder blade in a wound inflicted about 1890.
But a BBC expert says 19th Century hunters would not have been bothered with a young whale, so it could have already been around for some time before that date.

Man’s 50mph wheelchair ride

A disabled man was taken for a 50mph ride along a US highway after his wheelchair got jammed in the grille of a lorry.
The back of the 21-year-old man’s wheelchair was scooped up as he passed in front of a lorry leaving a petrol station, Michigan State Police said.
After four miles, the driver pulled over at a truck stop where police caught up and told him about the man on his front end.
He refused to believe there was a man in a wheelchair stuck to the front of his truck until he saw it for himself, police said
Police in the town of Paw Paw, Michigan, said he told them “it was quite a ride”, and complained only that he had spilled his soda.

Boy’s head stuck in toilet
Firefighters in Essex came to the rescue of a young boy who had a toilet seat stuck on his head.
The boy, aged two and a half, and his worried mother went to Braintree fire station after she was unable to get the small trainer seat off his head, reports the BBC.
Firefighter Chris Cox said: “We put some dish washing liquid on his head and ears and it slid off nice as pie.
“The boy was very brave and didn’t make a fuss and once we had got the seat off he toddled away as happy as can be.”
Mr Cox added: “The boy had put his head through it and couldn’t get it out again, he came in here wearing it like a collar.
“His mum had tried to get it over his head but couldn’t budge it so she walked him down here and asked us to have a look at it and we went to work and we managed to get it off in no time.”

Man had bullet in heart for 40 years
A man shot in the heart by US troops during the Vietnam war has had the bullet removed – after 40 years.
Le Dinh Hung, 60, said from his bed in the Hanoi Heart Hospital: “I feel much better now. The chest pain has eased.”
He added: “I was very lucky to survive. People believe in their fate and I do too.”
When he was shot in 1968, the bullet tore through his stomach, hit his cardiac valve and lodged at the back of his heart.
Surgeons carried out a three hour operation to finally remove it after he went to hospital complaining of unbearable chest pains.
Dr Nguyen Sinh Hien, who also replaced his damaged heart valve with an artificial one, said: “It is the strangest case that I have ever seen.
“Normally a person with a bullet in the heart would die immediately if they didn’t have surgery right away.”
Hung was shot fighting for the communist North in Quang Tri province, near the former Demilitarised Zone that separated North and South Vietnam.
Surgeons tried to remove the bloodcaked bullet in 1969 but failed.
Despite being in constant pain, Hung, whose home is in the Ha Tay province, went on to work at a medical school and had three children with his wife.
